HISTORY

The BNP PARIBAS Group was born on May 23rd 2000 from the merger of the Banque Nationale de Paris and Paribas. However the origins of the Group date back much further in 1948.

The Banque Nationale de Paris is the result of the merger on May 4th 1966 of the Comptoir National d'Escompte de Paris (CNEP), founded in 1848 and the Banque Nationale pour le Commerce et l’Industrie (BNCI(BNCI) founded in 1913 formerly named the Banque Nationale de Crédit (BNC).

The existence of BNP Paribas in Africa is very old:

·         In 1939, the Banque Nationale pour le Commerce et l’Industrie (BNCI) opened an agency in Dakar; it would become in 1962 the Banque Internationale pour le Commerce et l’Industrie du Senegal (BICIS).

·         In 1940, agencies in Abidjan and Conakry are founded; the one in Abidjan became in 1962 the Banque Internationale pour le Commerce et l’Industrie de Côte d'Ivoire (BICICI).

·         In 1941, an agency opened in Bamako, in 1942 in Cotonou and in 1945 in Lomé.

·         In 1945, the Banque Nationale pour le Commerce et l’Industrie (BNCI) was established in Libreville; it became the Banque Nationale de Paris in Gabon in 1966 and the Banque Internationale pour le Commerce et l’Industrie du Gabon (BICIG) in 1973.

·         In 1961 the Union Bancaire pour le Commerce et l'Industrie was founded, following the merger of the Banque Nationale pour le Commerce et l'Industrie-Afrique (BNCI-A)  and the Union Financière et Technique de Tunisie (UFITEC).

·         In 1964, the Banque Marocaine pour le Commerce et l’Industrie was established during the moroccanization process of companies.

·         In 1973, the BNP Group opened the Banque Internationale pour le Commerce, l’Industrie et l’Agriculture du Burkina Faso (BICIA-B)

·         In 1999 the Banque Internationale pour le Commerce et l’Industrie du Mali (BICIM) was founded.

·         In 1982, the Banque pour l’Industrie et le Commerce – Comores (BIC Comores) opened.

·         In 1985, the BNP Group was again established in Guinea and opened the Banque Internationale pour le Commerce et l’Industrie de Guinée (BICIGUI), making use of  the insertion of the market economy in the country.

·         In 2002, the BNP Group restarted its activities in Algeria with the opening of BNP Paribas El Djazair.

·         In 2012, the BNP Group was allowed by the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) to open a banking establishment in South Africa.
